Character.AI Data Export Delays and Troubleshooting

Character.AI says an export may take 3 to 4 weeks, and the download link is valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. If the email does not come or the link has expired, check the account email and your spam folder, then write to the company. While you wait, save your chats by hand.

How long Character.AI data export requests take

The help center says: “Please note that exports can take 3-4 weeks to process.” It also says that when the export is ready, the company sends “an email with a download link to the email address associated with your account.”

Count the weeks from the day you asked. We found no way to speed an export up, and the help center does not promise a faster time.

The court dates make timing tight. A request made after about November 19 may not arrive before December 17, the latest outside date in the court papers. See the timeline.

What to do when the export email never arrives

Do these checks in order.

Count the time. Less than 4 weeks since your request is still inside the range the company gives.
Check that the request went through. On the web a pop-up confirms that you will get an email. In the app a “Success” banner appears. If you saw neither, ask again.
Check the right inbox. The link goes to the email address on your Character.AI account, which may not be the address you use most. Look in spam and junk folders too.
After 4 weeks, write to the company. Use the request form at support.character.ai or write to privacy@character.ai. Give the email address on your account and the date you asked. The company says it takes reasonable steps to verify identity, so expect questions.

What to do when the download link has expired

The help center says the link “will be valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent.” We found no help center article that explains how to get a new link after it expires, and none that says whether a new request restarts the 3 to 4 weeks.

Write to the company as described above, say that your link expired, and ask for a new one. Meanwhile, save your most important chats by hand so you are not waiting with nothing.

Missing chat history and failed export fixes

Character.AI has not published what the export file contains, and its help center article does not describe it. Some people who received exports have said theirs were incomplete. If chats are missing or the file will not open, do not delete your account. Save the missing chats by hand, and tell the company which chats are missing.

Alternative solutions when official exports take weeks

Copy chats by hand: open the chat, select the conversation, copy it and paste it into a document. See how to export your chats.
