How to Delete Your Character.AI Account and Data

Step-by-step Character.AI account deletion

Character.AI’s help center says: “Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed.” These are its steps.

1. On the web: go to your Profile, then Profile Settings, then Account, then Manage Account & Data, and select Delete Account.
2. In the app: open your Profile, look for the settings icon and select Remove Account.

The help center page for these steps shows that it was last updated about two years ago, so the menu names may have changed. The privacy policy (effective July 1, 2026) says the same thing in general terms: “You may delete your account through your account profile page.”

What may stay after you delete your account

The privacy policy says some information can be exempt from deletion requests: “we may retain certain information for legal compliance and to secure our Services.” It also says the company keeps information “for the time necessary for the purposes for which it is processed,” and that the length of time depends on the purpose and on your choices.

If you made a character that other people can use, the policy says: “we reserve the right to preserve that Character’s characteristics and to keep that Character active on the Services, even if you otherwise delete your data and your account.”

The Terms of Service (last updated August 27, 2025) say that ending your account does not end the company’s rights to your content.

How to delete all Character.AI chats

We did not find an official “delete all chats” button or help article. The help center articles we found cover deleting the whole account only. Deleting the account is the documented way to remove everything, and it cannot be undone.

If you want to remove chats but keep your account, you can ask the company through its request form or at privacy@character.ai. We cannot say whether it offers this.

Deletion timelines and CCPA or GDPR data requests

Character.AI’s policy lists rights that depend on where you live. They include getting a copy of your data in a portable, machine-readable format, asking for deletion of certain personal information, objecting to how it is used, and opting out of sales or targeted advertising. To use them, use the request form at support.character.ai, write to privacy@character.ai, or write to Character.AI, #1152, 700 El Camino Real, Suite 120, Menlo Park CA 94025. The company says it takes “reasonable steps to verify your identity and requests.”

The documents we read do not give a deletion time. The law sets limits on how long a company may take to answer. These limits are legal rules, not promises by Character.AI.

Under the GDPR, answers to these requests are free in general. Under California law, you can ask what personal information a business holds about you up to twice a year at no charge. Exceptions apply, for example when the business is legally required to keep information.

In the EEA and the UK, the company’s notice also lists the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Removing stored age verification and personal records

Character.AI says all users go through an age assurance check. It says it works with a company called Persona and does not directly handle or store the documents you submit. Its help center says: “Character.AI does not collect or store any personal data submitted during age verification.”

For the data Persona handles, the help center says: “Any biometric data or ID submitted is automatically and permanently deleted within 7 days.” It adds that you do not need to send a deletion request for that data. Its age assurance FAQ says Persona keeps any ID it collects for one week.

The privacy policy lists your date of birth and age among the information the company collects. It gives no separate retention period for it. If you have questions about how age verification is handled, the regional notice invites you to write to privacy@character.ai.

How do I delete my Character.AI account?

On the web, go to your Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, and select Delete Account. In the app, open your Profile, look for the settings icon and select Remove Account. The company says deletion is permanent.

How long does a Character.AI deletion request take?

The documents we read give no deletion time. Under the GDPR a company must answer within one month, which can be extended by two further months. Under California law the limit is 45 calendar days, which can be extended by 45 more.

How do I request my Character.AI data under the GDPR?

Use the request form at support.character.ai, or write to privacy@character.ai, and say you want a copy of your data. The company may ask you to verify your identity first. You can also use the Export Data button in your settings, which takes 3 to 4 weeks.

Can I delete all my Character.AI chats at once?

We found no official way to do that without deleting the account. Deleting the account is permanent, so export first.

What happens to my age verification data?

The company says Persona handles it, that biometric data or an ID is deleted within 7 days, and that you do not need to ask for this. Your date of birth is listed in the privacy policy among the information the company collects.
