How to Export Your Character.AI Chats and Conversations

Use Export Data in your Character.AI settings. The company says an export can take 3 to 4 weeks, and the emailed download link works for 7 days. While you wait, save the chats you care about most by hand.

Official data export steps for Character.AI

Character.AI’s help center says you can request a copy of your account data from your profile settings. These are the steps it gives.

On the web: open your Profile, then Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, and choose Export Data. A pop-up confirms that you will get an email with a download link.
In the app: open your Profile, tap the Settings icon, tap Legal & Privacy, then tap Export Data. A “Success” banner appears when your request has been submitted.
Wait for the email. It goes to the email address on your account. Check your spam folder too.
Download the file within 7 days of the day the email was sent, and keep it in a safe place.

The help center says the export “may take 3-4 weeks to complete” and that the link is “valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent.” It does not describe what is inside the file. See how to open and read the export file.

Do not delete your account before your export arrives. Deleting is permanent, and deleting first loses your chats.

Exporting chat history before the service shuts down

The company says its court-supervised sale process should be complete by the end of November or early December 2026. It also says the platform will be wound down if no bid lets it continue. We found no statement about whether exports will still be sent after a wind-down.

Because an export takes 3 to 4 weeks, ask today. A request made after about November 19 may not arrive before December 17, the latest outside date in the court papers. See the timeline and key dates.

Saving Character.AI chat logs as text or PDF

The help center articles we found describe only the whole-account export. We found no per-chat download button. While you wait for your export, you can save chats by hand.

Text: open the chat, select the conversation, copy it and paste it into a document. Plain text is fine. On the website, copied text may come out with the newest message first, so check the order after you paste.
Screenshots: capture the parts you want to keep from the top of the chat down. Overlap each screenshot with the last one by one message so nothing is missed.
PDF: most desktop browsers can save a page as a PDF from the print window. Scroll to the top of the chat first so older messages are loaded, because a printed page only holds what is on the page. Open the PDF and check that the whole chat is there.
Write down the character’s name and its creator’s name, so you can find the right character later.

Backing up and archiving long roleplay histories

Keep the original export file untouched. Save it to your computer and to cloud storage, so you have two copies.
Name each saved file with the character’s name and the date you saved it.
Make a plain-text copy of the chats you want to read again. Text files open on any device and do not depend on any app.
