AI Chat Apps That Let You Import Character.AI Chats

Castmanor, SillyTavern and SpicyChat say in their own documents that they take Character.AI chats or characters. Castmanor lists the official Character.AI export file as being tested. Janitor AI’s help center describes no import. The table gives the same facts for each service, with a source. We have not tested any of them.

Which AI apps support direct Character.AI chat imports?

This guide is run by the team building Castmanor, which is in the table. Every service is listed with the same facts. If a service tells us a row is wrong, we change it: write to hello@castmanor.com from an address at the service’s own domain.

The table follows the main guide’s rule for listing a service: it is live, states an age rule and publishes a privacy policy. Here a service is shown if its own documents describe an import from Character.AI, or if it is in our main guide and we checked its help center and found none. “Not stated” means the pages we read do not say. Kindroid, Nomi and Talkie are in the main guide but not here, because we have not read what their documents say about importing from Character.AI. Rows are in alphabetical order.

Castmanor is for adults. Every character on Castmanor is an AI. SillyTavern is free, open-source software that you run on your own computer and connect to an AI model. Both SillyTavern and SpicyChat name the CAI Tools browser extension for getting Character.AI data out. It is not made by any of these services. See what to check before you use a browser extension.

Importing chat history into companion platforms

Services take your chats in one of four ways. Which ones a service accepts decides how easy the move is.

Whatever you pick, save your chats first. See how to export your chats. The official export takes 3 to 4 weeks, so copy the chats that matter most by hand while you wait.

How to resume old roleplays in a new app

  1. Save the chat in at least one form: a copy of the text, screenshots, or the export file.
  2. Pick a service from the table that takes that form.
  3. Import the chat, and give the character’s name if the service asks for it.
  4. Open the result and check a few messages against what you remember, including who is speaking.
  5. If a service has no import, paste a short summary of the story and the last few messages into the first message or into the memory feature, if it has one.

Preserving character memory and continuity across apps

The text of your chats and the text of a character’s definition can move. Two things do not move by themselves. One is what the old service remembered about you, such as the messages you pinned with Character.AI’s Pinned Memories. Copy those by hand if they matter. The other is the voice of the AI model, which will be a little different on every service.

A character card keeps the character’s text, not the story you wrote with it. To keep the story, import the chat as well.

Questions and answers

Which apps can import my Character.AI chats?

Castmanor says it takes pasted chats, screenshots and CAI Tools files, and that the official export file is being tested. SillyTavern’s documents say to use CAI Tools for Character.AI chats and bots. See the table for the other services we checked.

Is there a Character.AI alternative that lets me import my chats?

Yes, according to the services’ own documents. See the table above. We have not tested any of them.

Can I upload my Character.AI export somewhere?

Castmanor lists the official export file as being tested. Character.AI has not published the file’s format, so no service can promise to read every export. Chats saved with CAI Tools are described in the documents of SillyTavern and Castmanor.

How do I continue a Character.AI chat on another site?

Save the chat, pick a service that takes that form of chat, import it, and check a few messages. If the service has no import, paste a short summary and the last few messages.

Can I restore my Character.AI chats in another app?

You can recreate a chat history in a service that imports chats. The new app’s AI model will not sound exactly the same.
