Essential steps to complete before Character.AI closes

Character.AI has not closed. Its blog says the platform “remains up and running,” and that it will be wound down only if no bid lets it continue. These steps are worth doing either way.

Request your data export today. See how to export your chats.
While you wait, save the chats you care about most by hand: copy the text or take screenshots.
If you made characters, copy each one’s name, greeting, description and definition. See how to back up your characters.
Write down the names of your favorite characters and their creators.
Look at where people are moving and check each service’s age rule and privacy policy.
Watch your email for the download link, and note the dates in the timeline.

Should you delete your account immediately or wait?

Wait until you have your export. Two facts decide this. The company says deletion “is permanent and cannot be reversed.” It also says an export “may take 3-4 weeks to complete.” We found no source that says what happens to a pending export request if you delete the account first, so do not rely on it.

Some people want to delete soon because of how the company’s privacy policy treats a sale. That policy lets the company disclose information in connection with a sale of company assets. A coalition of state attorneys general asked the court that any buyer let users delete their data before any sale of it. That is a request to the court, not a promise to users. If privacy is your main worry, the order stays the same. Request the export now, then delete as soon as the file arrives and you have checked it.

Recommended order: export first, then delete the account

Request the export in your settings. The help center says the link is emailed to the address on your account.
Download the file within 7 days of the day the email is sent. Save it in two places.

Because an export takes 3 to 4 weeks, a request made after about November 19 may not arrive before December 17, the latest outside date in the court papers.

Will Character.AI still provide data downloads after shutdown?

We found no source that says. In its blog post dated October 12, 2026, the company wrote: “you can delete your account or export your data through the app or the Character.ai website.” That describes what is available now. It does not describe what happens after a wind-down.

The states’ notice asks that any buyer keep “consumers’ ability to access the data held about them” and allow all consumers “the opportunity to delete their data prior to any sale of that data.” That is what the states would advocate. It is not a ruling.

This is why we suggest not waiting. Ask for your export now and keep the file.
