Character.AI Chat Export Extensions and Scrapers: What to Know

Character.AI has no per-chat download button that we could find. Some people use browser extensions or scripts that save a chat as a file. This page compares three of them using what their own pages say. We do not rank them and we have not tested them. Read the checklist before you install anything.

Instant export tools for Character.AI

The official route is the Export Data button in your settings. It takes 3 to 4 weeks and the help center does not describe the file. See how to export your chats. The tools below are made by other people. None of them is made by Character.AI.

The table lists the same facts for each tool, taken from the tool’s own pages on October 21, 2026. “Not stated” means we did not find it on those pages.

We have not run any of these tools. A tool can stop working when Character.AI changes its site. SillyTavern’s documentation names CAI Tools as the way to bring Character.AI chats and bots into SillyTavern, and SpicyChat’s documentation names it for importing characters.

What to check before you install a browser extension

  1. Who made it, and can you read the source code? Open source lets others check what it does.
  2. What it can access. The Firefox page for CAI Tools lists required permissions: access to browser tabs and to your data on character.ai and chatbotmanager.net, and optional access to other sites. An extension that can read character.ai pages can read what you see there.
  3. Whether it uploads your chats. Read its privacy statement. Prefer a tool that saves a file on your own device.
  4. Whether it asks for your password or login token. Never give a password. A login token is a cookie value that lets whoever holds it act as you on the site. Give it only to code you have read.
  5. Whether you are asked to paste code into the developer console. Browsers warn about this on purpose, because pasted code runs with access to your session. Only paste code you have read and understand.
  6. Whether it matches the rules. Character.AI’s Terms say users will not use “data mining, robots, scraping or similar automated data gathering or extraction methods.” The Terms also say the company may suspend or terminate an account “for any reason.” We cannot say whether using a tool would lead to that.

Getting past infinite scroll on long chat histories

If a chat page loads older messages as you scroll up, copying or printing the page only captures what is loaded, so a long chat can come out cut short.

Some tools say they read the chat the way the site itself does, instead of scrolling. The CAI Tools guide says its history download needs you to click “Start fetch” and wait for the history to load, and that “It can take time.” The Morse exporter’s page says it asks for one thing at a time, a quarter of a second apart, and rests for ten seconds whenever Character.AI asks it to, so that a long history does not load the site. The official export does not need scrolling at all.

Free third-party tools to back up conversations

Some features of these tools are free and some are not, as the table shows. Whatever you use, try it on one short chat first and compare the saved file with the chat. Keep the file private.

Whatever tool you use, keep a plain copy too. Copy the text of your most important chats into a document, as described in how to export your chats.

Questions and answers

Is there a Character.AI chat export extension that works?

CAI Tools was updated on October 15, 2026 and lists chat downloads as a feature. We have not tested it or any other tool, and a site change can break a tool at any time.

Is there a tool to export Character.AI chats instantly?

These tools run in your browser, so they do not wait for the official export, which takes 3 to 4 weeks. They are not made by Character.AI, and the company’s Terms restrict automated data gathering.

Is there a free tool to back up Character.AI conversations?

Some tools have free features. CAI Tools lists in-app purchases or paid features. The Morse exporter and the characterai-scraper script do not state a price on the pages we read.

My Character.AI chat is too long to scroll. What can I do?

Copying or printing only captures loaded messages. Use the official export, or a tool that says it reads the full history, and check the saved file against the chat.

Which Character.AI backup extension is best?

We do not rank them. Compare who made it, what it can access, whether it uploads your chats, and whether it asks for a password or token.
