Leaving Character.AI: the guide

How to Turn Character.AI Chats into Stories and eBooks

Save the chat as text, clean out the labels and page counters, arrange it into chapters, then make an EPUB or PDF with a free tool such as pandoc or calibre. Check who owns what before you share it. Keep an untouched copy of the original chat.

Formatting exported chat logs into book chapters

  1. Get the text of the chat. See how to export your chats. Copying the chat into a document is the simplest way.
  2. Keep an untouched copy of the original. Work on a second copy.
  3. Clean the text. Copying a chat can bring along extra text. One tool’s README lists what it removes: character name headers, “c.ai” labels, “(edited)”, page counters such as “2 / 30”, and button text such as reply, edit, delete and copy. Some formatting, such as italic actions, may also be lost, so read the pasted text against the chat.
  4. Put the messages in order. On the website, copied text may come out with the newest message first.
  5. Split the story into chapters. Scenes or sessions are natural breaks. Give each chapter a heading.
  6. Decide on a style. You can keep the back-and-forth as a script, or rewrite it as prose, with the character’s lines in quotation marks.

Converting Character.AI roleplay to EPUB and PDF eBooks

EPUB is a common e-book format. Two free tools can make one from a text or word-processor file.

Pandoc is free software that turns documents into other formats. Its page on creating an ebook says it can produce EPUB, and gives this one-line example for a Markdown text file: “pandoc mybook.txt -o mybook.epub”. A title line and an author line at the top of the file, such as “% My Book” and “% Sam Smith”, set the book’s title and author, and images are included automatically.

Calibre is free e-book software. Its manual says it has “a conversion system that is designed to be very easy to use.” It names DOCX, HTML, TXT, ODT and RTF among the files it can convert, and EPUB, AZW3, MOBI and PDF among the results. The manual calls PDF “one of the worst formats to convert from,” so start from your original text or word-processor file, not from a PDF.

For a PDF, most word processors can save a document as a PDF. Open the result and read through it before you share it.

Tools to clean up dialogues for publishing and archiving

Archive the original. Keep the untouched chat text or the export file with the finished book, so you can always go back.

Before you share or publish

Character.AI’s Terms of Service (last updated August 27, 2025) say that, as between you and the company, you own the characters you create and the content you generate with the service. They also say you promise that you own what you submit or have the permissions you need. The Terms give the company a broad license to use that content too.

That does not answer every question. A character made by someone else belongs to that person, as between them and the company. A character based on a book, film or game may involve the rights of other people. If you plan to sell or publish a story, ask the creator of any character you did not make, and check with a lawyer where rights matter.

Chats can also hold personal details about you or others. Remove them before you share.
