Press fact sheet: the Character.AI bankruptcy and this guide
For reporters. Every fact on this page has a source you can open and a date. This guide does not predict what a buyer will do with user data, and it does not give legal advice. Press contact: press@castmanor.com.

The case in brief
Character Technologies, Inc., the company behind Character.AI, began a voluntary Chapter 11 case on October 12, 2026. It is Case No. 26-11603 (BLS) in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The claims and noticing agent, Stretto, runs the case website.
The company’s blog says it began the case “to pursue a court-supervised sale of all or substantially all of our assets.” It says the process “will be complete by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026,” and that “If such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down.” It also says the platform “remains up and running” (post dated October 12, 2026).
The company’s first-day declaration says Character.AI serves “approximately 12 million active monthly users” (Dkt. 18, paragraph 7, page 3). A filing on notice (Dkt. 8, paragraph 21 and note 7, page 10) says there are approximately 163 million current and past platform users. It says serving all of them, even by email, “would be cost-prohibitive.” It also says the company “does not believe its current and past platform users are creditors to whom notice must be provided.”
The bidding procedures motion (Dkt. 15) asks the court to approve Disney Worldwide Services, Inc. as stalking horse purchaser for what it calls the “Disney Target Assets.” This guide does not describe individual bids beyond what the filings say. It has not summarized the motion’s terms.
On October 21, 2026 we found no order approving a sale on the court docket. Dates can change, so check the docket.
Key dates, Eastern Time
“Dkt.” is the number of a filing on the court docket. The court can change these dates. The motion lets the company extend the bid deadline and adjourn the sale hearing (Dkt. 15, pages 26 and 30). The timeline page explains each date in plain words.
| Date | What happens | Source |

| November 30, 2026 | To qualify, a bid from anyone other than a stalking horse must commit to close by this date. If the winning bidder has not closed by then, or by a later date the company sets, the back-up bid takes its place | Dkt. 15, pages 24 and 31 |
| December 17, 2026 | The “Outside Date” in the motion: the sale is not to close later than this unless the parties agree otherwise in writing | Dkt. 15, page 16 |
Exports and account deletion, from Character.AI’s help center
The help center says: “Your export may take 3-4 weeks to complete.” It says the download link in the email “will be valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent.” On deleting an account it says: “Account Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed.” The export page does not describe what the file contains.
This guide’s own arithmetic, not a company statement: a request made after about November 19 may not arrive before December 17, the Outside Date. See how to export your chats.
What the sources say about user data and a sale
Character.AI’s privacy policy (effective July 1, 2026) says: “We may disclose certain information, in connection with or during negotiations or closing of any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.” The company’s blog says: “Your information continues to be protected under our Privacy Policy, and our data privacy and security practices are unchanged.”
On October 14, 2026, a coalition of attorneys general from 39 states and the District of Columbia filed a Notice of Interest and Reservation of Rights (Dkt. 33). Florida’s attorney general joined it on October 20 (Dkt. 58). Item 8 on the states’ list of what any purchaser should be prepared to do reads: “Maintaining consumers’ ability to access the data held about them and allowing all consumers the opportunity to delete their data prior to any sale of that data” (Dkt. 33, page 24).
Not known from the sources we read on October 21, 2026: which assets, if any, include chats or other user data; what any buyer would do with them; whether the court will appoint a consumer privacy ombudsman; and whether users will be told by email. This guide does not say what a buyer will or will not do. The longer reading is what happens to your chats in the bankruptcy.
